Cropping is a resolution-budget decision. Halve both dimensions and you keep one quarter of the pixels. Output PPI then depends on the physical size you choose, while viewing distance is a separate interpretation assumption. These relationships help you plan a proof. They do not establish lens detail, focus, print process, or whether a composition is right.
Choose delivery aspect first, inspect the actual crop, calculate the remaining pixels, then make a controlled output proof at the intended size and distance. For a panorama or scan, the same sequence applies: pixel arithmetic tells you what remains; the actual output reveals seams, grain, processing, paper, and detail.
Viewing distance changes what a given PPI actually needs to deliver. A gallery print viewed from across a room can look sharp at a PPI that would look soft held at arm's length, and a phone screen viewed at typical reading distance has different practical requirements again. There is no single PPI threshold that applies everywhere, because the criterion is really an angular-resolution question: how much of the visual field a given amount of blur occupies at the distance a viewer will actually stand. Stating the intended distance turns a bare PPI number into an interpretable one.
Borders and paper geometry add a second layer of arithmetic on top of the crop itself: a stated border width subtracts from the printable image area on a fixed sheet size, and a mismatched aspect ratio between the cropped image and the paper forces a choice between cropping further or leaving uneven margins. None of this arithmetic can see the photograph's actual content, so a border or crop that is geometrically correct can still cut through a detail that matters. A physical or on-screen proof at the intended size remains the only way to catch that.
