A crop spends a finite resolution budget
Cropping is often the fastest way to rescue framing, but it spends a finite part of the capture. This planner turns that choice into visible output consequences. A crop that halves both image dimensions retains one quarter of the pixels, not one half. That can still be entirely workable for a modest display or print, while leaving less freedom for a larger output or a second crop. The result is not a verdict on image quality. It is the concrete resolution budget left for the next decision.
Start with a 6000×4000-pixel capture and crop both dimensions to 50 percent. The remaining file is 3000×2000 pixels, or 25 percent of the original pixel count. At 12 by 8 inches, that yields 250 PPI. Enlarging the same crop raises the physical size but reduces available PPI; using the full frame preserves more margin but changes composition. Compare both states before deciding whether to crop tighter, change output size, or make another frame. Pixel arithmetic cannot reveal missed focus, motion blur, lens detail, or processing damage, so inspect the exported image as well.
Compare the chosen crop and output at the intended physical size and viewing distance. A proof is more informative than a generic PPI or quality label because it includes the actual subject, processing, paper, and display context.

- Does a 2× crop mean I have half the resolution?
- No. Halving both width and height leaves one quarter as many pixels. The planner shows both the retained dimensions and the remaining pixel fraction.
- Why no universal best setting?
- There is no universal best setting because the relevant tradeoff changes with the subject, light, movement, output, and the part of the image that matters. This tool makes the stated tradeoff visible rather than hiding it behind a generic recommendation.
