Upscaling changes pixels, not captured evidence

Upscaling can change the pixel dimensions available to an output workflow. It does not prove that new scene detail has been captured. That distinction matters most after a tight crop: the file can be made larger, while focus, motion, lens response, compression, and original sampling remain the evidence you actually have.

Use output arithmetic to compare native and resampled scenarios, then judge an output proof at intended size and distance. Keep the master and record the resampling step so a derivative is not mistaken for the original capture. The right question is not whether an enlarged file is "good" in the abstract, but whether the intended output meets a controlled review.

Interpolation methods, whatever their sophistication, are estimating pixel values between the ones the sensor actually captured. A more advanced method can produce a smoother or more pleasing enlargement than a simple one, but "more pleasing" and "more accurate to the original scene" are different claims. Neither a simple nor an advanced upscaler can recover detail that was never resolved at capture, whether the limit was focus, motion, diffraction, or sensor sampling; they can only make an existing pixel grid larger with an algorithm's best guess filling the gaps.

This matters most immediately after a tight crop, where the remaining pixel count can be small relative to the desired output size. Upscaling a heavily cropped region raises its pixel dimensions without raising the amount of real scene information the crop contains, so the output can look adequate at a screen thumbnail size and reveal its limits at a large print size. A proof at the actual intended size and viewing distance is the only reliable way to catch that before delivery.
