A 6000×4000-pixel 3:2 capture cropped to 5:4 retains 5000×4000 pixels, or about 83 percent of the original pixels. A 16:9 crop instead keeps full width and removes height. If the delivery needs both square and wide versions, framing with extra margin can prevent one final crop from sacrificing a critical edge. The grid and safe area are planning aids, not rules for what a photograph should look like.

Compare the chosen crop and output at the intended physical size and viewing distance. A proof is more informative than a generic PPI or quality label because it includes the actual subject, processing, paper, and display context.

Does the thirds overlay tell me the best crop?
No. It only provides a visible reference. The subject, intent, and delivery use determine composition.
Why no universal best setting?
There is no universal best setting because the relevant tradeoff changes with the subject, light, movement, output, and the part of the image that matters. This tool makes the stated tradeoff visible rather than hiding it behind a generic recommendation.
