Film Reciprocity, Development, Scanning, and Hybrid Workflows
Film workflow becomes defensible when its variables are recorded together. The meter reference, declared EI, stock, sourced reciprocity data, development request, scan method, master file, and output proof each answer a different question. A generic online rule cannot replace a controlled test through your actual stock, lab, and scan path.
Use a test roll to vary one documented factor at a time. Keep the source for any reciprocity correction attached to the result and refuse to extrapolate beyond it. Preserve master scans separately from working files and verify independent copies before relying on an archive.
Reciprocity failure is stock and process specific, so a correction is only as trustworthy as its source. A manufacturer datasheet, a lab's own tested table, or your own controlled test can each supply a meter-time-to-adjusted-time relationship, and interpolating between two points on that same table is defensible arithmetic. Extrapolating past the table's tested range, or borrowing a table from a different stock or process, turns a sourced correction into a guess wearing the appearance of precision.
Rating a film at an exposure index other than its box speed is a declared test relationship, not a universal push or pull instruction. The exposed EI compared with the normal EI gives an exact stop difference; what that difference should mean for development time, contrast, or grain depends on the specific developer, dilution, temperature, and agitation a lab or home process actually uses. A mismatch between the declared EI change and the requested development process is exactly the kind of gap worth catching in writing before a roll goes into a tank neither the photographer nor the lab has tested together before.
