A recovery plan, not just another copy

A backup is a recovery plan, not simply another copy of a file. Copies in the same room can fail together. A cloud folder can still inherit deletion or account problems. The 3-2-1 idea helps make copy count, media diversity, and offsite separation visible, but only a verified restore tells you whether a particular plan will work.

A working drive, a separate local drive, and an offsite copy provide three declared copies across two locations. If all three use the same untested workflow, the plan still has a restore uncertainty. Remove the local room in the stress test: if the offsite copy remains and has been verified, the plan has a stated path forward. Run a small restore test before the job depends on it.

This is a planning calculation, not a certification. Confirm the relevant camera, lens, card, printer, contract, location, or workflow constraint in the real setup before relying on the result.

Compare the chosen crop and output at the intended physical size and viewing distance. A proof is more informative than a generic PPI or quality label because it includes the actual subject, processing, paper, and display context.

FAQ

Does 3-2-1 guarantee I will not lose files?
No. It is a planning pattern. Corruption, account access, human error, and untested restores can still defeat a backup plan.
Is this a guarantee?
No. The result is bounded by the inputs and assumptions shown on the page. It is designed to support a better next decision, not replace a test, measurement, proof, or professional judgement where one is needed.
