A recordable test relationship
Film metering is a recordable test relationship among the meter reference, the exposure index you choose, the setting you actually use, and the development path. A rating change is not a universal correction. The useful result is a transparent frame record that lets you compare a consistent roll and lab process instead of relying on a generic exposure rule.
If the meter reference is ISO 400 and you declare EI 200, the arithmetic places the chosen exposure one stop away from that meter reference. Declaring EI 800 moves it one stop in the other direction. The film does not reveal its final result from that number alone. Record the stock, meter method, development instruction, scene, and frame, then compare the developed/scanned test before committing.
