Astrophotography calculations are starting points for a tested capture plan. Field of view tells you what a declared target box could fit geometrically. An untracked exposure relationship can suggest a shutter bracket. Neither knows sky brightness, seeing, tracking accuracy, weather, visibility, or the exact stars in your frame.

Plan the sequence as carefully as the exposure: interval, session length, storage, battery, dew control, and calibration frames can determine whether a capture is complete. Preserve originals and test the exact lens, camera, and sky conditions before relying on a long session.

An untracked shutter guideline, such as an NPF-style rule, estimates a maximum exposure before star trailing becomes visible at a stated pixel scale. It is derived from focal length, aperture, pixel pitch, and declination, not from the actual sky that night. Seeing, haze, moonlight, and light pollution all change what "acceptably sharp" looks like at a given exposure, so the guideline is a bracket starting point for a real frame review, not a guarantee that stars will render as points at the calculated shutter speed.

Stacking turns a single-frame exposure decision into a session-length one. A target integration time divided by a chosen sub-exposure length gives a required frame count, and that count combined with the interval between frames gives the real session duration, which is reliably longer than the raw integration time alone. Calibration frames such as darks and flats add their own storage and time cost without adding signal to the target itself. None of this arithmetic evaluates tracking accuracy, guiding error, or the final stack's signal-to-noise ratio, which depend on the mount, the sky, and the processing software actually used.
