Three different jobs, often conflated

Camera position, focal length, and entrance pupil serve different jobs. Position changes the geometry between near and far objects. Focal length changes framing from that position. The entrance-pupil region matters when rotating a system for a panorama with close foreground. Treating all three as "lens compression" produces bad planning decisions.

The same 10cm movement matters far less without the close foreground. To preserve a chosen perspective, select position first.
