A shortcut for a position change
"Lens compression" is usually a shortcut for a position change. When you move farther away to keep the same frame with a longer lens, near and far objects become more similar in relative size. The longer lens then narrows the field of view to preserve framing. Separate those two actions and you can choose perspective intentionally instead of attributing it to the lens alone.
With an equal-size near object at two metres and a far object at 20m, the distance ratio is 10. Move to four metres with the far object at 22m and the ratio is 5.5, so the near object occupies less relative dominance. Switching focal length while staying at either position changes the captured field, but not that position-based relationship. Choose the camera position first, then frame with the lens.
