Macro turns ordinary controls into one tight decision

Macro work makes ordinary camera controls interact more tightly. More magnification can reduce working space and depth while increasing the effective f-number. The frame may look simple, but the capture plan has to account for light, subject movement, focus repeatability, and whether one frame can cover the critical depth.

Begin with the desired magnification and actual working space. Use effective aperture and a stated depth criterion to plan a test frame. If one frame cannot cover the subject, choose a deliberate overlap sequence and keep the subject, camera, and light stable enough for the intended workflow. A calculated slice count is a starting plan, not evidence that a merge will work.

Extension changes the arithmetic without changing the lens. Adding extension tubes or bellows moves the lens farther from the sensor, which can raise magnification while also raising the effective f-number for the same marked aperture, a light and depth cost that arrives together. The same tension shows up in working distance: more magnification generally means less room between the front of the lens and the subject, which limits where a light, a reflector, or a diffuser can physically go without casting a shadow into the frame. Plan the lighting position before the framing distance, not after.

This resource does not choose a stack count, a lens, a flash configuration, or a merging workflow for you. Those depend on the actual subject's shape, how much it moves between frames, the software used to align and blend the stack, and how much post-capture cropping the output allows. A calculated slice count assumes even depth coverage across a flat working plane; a subject with an irregular profile or any movement between frames can defeat that assumption regardless of how carefully the count was calculated.
