The simple relationship is useful for a first plan, but internal-focus lenses and real working distances make the actual setup something you must test.
Add 25mm of extension to a simple 100mm prime starting near zero magnification. The approximation adds .25× magnification and changes f/8 toward an effective f/10, about .64 stops. Add 50mm to a 50mm lens and the approximation reaches 1× with f/8 becoming f/16, a two-stop change. Verify compatibility and working distance before assuming the arithmetic will fit the subject.
