Two lanes, not one exposure triangle

Flash and ambient share aperture and ISO, but shutter timing is often the control that changes the existing light while leaving a short direct-flash burst nearly unchanged. That is why one exposure triangle is not enough for a practical mixed-light decision. Enter the ambient baseline and the flash distance separately, then make the two lanes visible before changing either one.

A GN 32m flash at ISO 100 and four metres gives a direct-flash reference near f/8 at full power. At quarter power, the guide number halves and the reference is f/4. Selecting f/5.6 falls between those states. Slowing the shutter can raise the ambient contribution but cannot fix a direct-flash distance or power mismatch. Test the ambient without flash first, then make one flash change at a time.

Does shutter speed always leave flash unchanged?
It can be a useful approximation for a normal short flash burst within the camera's documented sync behaviour. HSS, long exposures, ambient, and camera-specific timing need separate confirmation.
