Distance is a separation tool, not just a power dial
The inverse-square relationship is strongest when a light behaves like a small direct source relative to the subject distances. Doubling distance reduces ideal direct illumination to one quarter, or two stops. That relationship can create deliberate separation between a near subject and a distant background, but it is not a complete studio simulation.
Put a direct key one metre from a subject and a background two metres from that light. The simplified model puts the background two stops below the subject before reflections or other lights. Move the light farther away and both distances become more similar in proportion, reducing the separation but changing the required exposure. Large softboxes, bounce surfaces, and close modifiers do not behave like the simple point-source model, so test the actual arrangement.
