Metering and compensation are often discussed as if every bright scene needs one fixed adjustment and every dark scene needs another. That is not a dependable rule. A meter gives a measurement under its own calibration and pattern. Exposure compensation is the photographer's intentional change from that baseline after deciding how the important subject should render.
Start with a known exposure or a test frame. Choose the stop change you want to test, then choose which control should carry it. A positive one-stop adjustment doubles the calculated exposure relative to the baseline. That can mean a shutter twice as long, an aperture one stop more open, ISO one stop higher, or a combination. The arithmetic is clear. The reason for choosing it still belongs to the photograph.
For a backlit portrait, you may want to give the face more exposure than a meter reading centered on the bright background suggests. But the exact adjustment depends on how much background you accept losing, how the camera meters, whether you will add fill, and the intended rendering. A silhouette can use the same scene and move in the opposite direction. The scene label does not contain the answer.
