Sharpness is not one number hidden in a file

Sharpness is not one number hidden in a file. A photograph can look soft because the focus plane missed the important subject, the camera or subject moved, the lens was used at a difficult aperture, a region has little texture, noise reduction removed fine contrast, a JPEG was compressed, or the final image was downsized. A browser cannot reliably separate those causes from one finished rendering.

This tool therefore measures something narrower: edge activity in regions you select from a local image. It converts the decoded pixels into a luma representation and measures how rapidly neighboring values change through a Laplacian calculation. The result is useful for comparing similar regions within the same image. It is not a rating of the photograph, the camera, or the lens.

Choose a critical textured region and a meaningful comparison region. An eye, a patterned fabric detail, or a product label may be useful if both selections have similar texture and scale. A smooth sky will naturally produce lower edge activity even when it is perfectly focused. Lower edge activity can come from defocus, motion, subject texture, light, noise reduction, compression, downsampling, or a deliberately smooth area. This measurement cannot isolate the cause.

If one comparable region has much less edge activity, use the result as a question. Check the focus point and subject distance. Compare shutter speed with subject and camera movement. Consider aperture, diffraction, stabilization, and export compression. Do not call the result proof of motion blur or bad focus.

Your image stays in the browser while this happens. Region coordinates, pixel values, and results are not uploaded or sent to analytics. Resetting removes the local analysis state.

FAQ

Does a higher edge-activity value mean a photo is better?
No. It describes local pixel variation in a chosen region. Content and processing affect it.
Can this prove motion blur?
No. It can show lower edge activity, but cannot isolate motion from focus, texture, compression, or processing.
Why compare regions from one image?
Different images can have different content, scale, exposure, and processing. Within-image comparisons are more controlled.
