Hyperfocal is a goal, not a universal setting
Hyperfocal distance is a focus setting for a specific goal: maximize a calculated acceptable-focus zone from a near point to infinity under a stated circle-of-confusion criterion. It is not a universal sharpness setting. The criterion depends on how much blur you are willing to accept in the final output, so the number needs to stay visible rather than being hidden behind a camera format label.
When you focus at the calculated hyperfocal distance, the near limit is approximately half that distance and the far limit reaches infinity in the model. Focusing at infinity instead can leave the range between half the hyperfocal distance and the hyperfocal distance outside the defined zone. That is why a landscape with an important foreground may benefit from focusing nearer than infinity.
For a 24 mm lens at f/8 with a 0.03 mm criterion, hyperfocal distance is about 2.42 m and the near limit is about 1.21 m. A foreground rock at 2 m is within that calculated zone. A detail at 1 m is not, so the plan needs a smaller aperture, a different framing, focus stacking, or a changed output criterion. The page makes the conflict explicit instead of treating hyperfocal as a button.
Stopping down can move the near limit closer, but it has costs. It can require a slower shutter or higher ISO and can make diffraction more relevant for fine output. The best action depends on wind, subject movement, tripod stability, the desired depth, and the final print or display. Use the comparison to inspect realistic aperture choices, then make a focus-check frame at the intended magnification.
Landscape scenes also have depth, tilt, field curvature, and atmospheric conditions that a simple model cannot erase. If the camera or subject is tilted, use the tilt-shift focus planner. If the near subject is close and magnified, use macro or focus stacking. Hyperfocal is a transparent geometric starting point, not a promise that the entire image will survive every output condition.
